Why Coverage Limits Can Fall Short for Injured Drivers in Alma, GA

Medical bills, lost income, and vehicle repairs can add up faster after an injury accident. Many drivers assume the at-fault driver's insurer will cover everything, but a policy only pays up to the amounts written in it. When the total of a claim goes past those limits, the injured person can be left to sort out how to cover the difference alone.

To address these situations, Georgia follows an at-fault system. This means the driver who caused harm is generally responsible for the resulting losses. State law requires drivers to carry at least $25,000 in bodily injury coverage per person, $50,000 in bodily injury coverage for all people combined, and $25,000 for property damage.

However, those minimums can fall short of serious medical costs. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage on a person's own policy may help fill some gaps, though what applies depends on the policy and how it was set up.

After any accident, the practical steps are much the same: keep every medical bill, gather the other driver's insurance details, and request copies of the policy declarations when possible. It is common that insurers ask for recorded statements or signed medical releases early on, before the full cost of treatment is known. An auto accident lawyer can review which policies may apply, help a person decide what to share, and present the documented losses to the insurer in an organized way.

Insurance paperwork can be confusing, and a policy limit is easy to misread. At Edwards Law, we can review the coverage that may be available for you and explain how the process usually works under Georgia law.
